I decided to read upon the article from the New York Times As Gunman Rampaged Through Florida School, Armed Deputy 'Never Went in'. While reading the article first I focused on the concept on the tip that was received by a student telling the F.B.I that Nikolas Cruz had owned a gun and had said that he had wanted to shoot up the school and become a professional school shooter. Right then and there that is a HUGE red flag that had been missed. If anyone had mentioned anything about a school shooting they should have immediately took action and investigated and not just ignore it.
Now talking about the incident with the deputy not going into the school while the shooting was happening is honestly ridiculous. There should be zero excuses for him to of not gone in the building and helped out the students who needed it. It seems as if he only wanted to protect himself and did not fully care enough to help out considering that is his job. People were saying how he could have been in shock and did not know how to handle the situation, but he was a trained officer and that is why he should have been able to handle the situation. It is very smart that the deputy sheriff had placed him under investigation to hear his side of the story, because I'm sure a ton of people want answers. I look it as also being selfish on his part. It is his job to protect and serve and he had done the complete opposite of that. He was more so looking out for himself rather than the students. What is also ridiculous is the fact that they have an armed deputy in the school, but now they want teachers to be armed also? That is the biggest mistake anyone could ever do. Not only could it possibly cause more school shootings, the teachers are not professionally trained to handle a gun like a police officer is and should be.
